Welcome to Room 10! I am very excited to be your child’s teacher this year. I have provided some information to help you become familiar with our classroom procedures, expectations and learning goals.
Morning Procedures:
2nd graders line up near the basketball court with the 3rd graders. There will be a cone with my name on it and that is where the students are to line up. If your child will be getting breakfast they should get their breakfast first and then join the line. I will greet them at the door at 7:49am. The tardy bell is at 7:54am. It is very important that your child arrives to school on time as we begin our learning promptly! If your child is tardy they will be bringing home missed work to complete as homework.
Snack:
Children are allowed to bring a healthy snack from home to have in class. They may also bring a water bottle to drink (only water in classroom- spills happen and juice and other liquids are sticky!).
Lunch:
Our lunch time is 11:25-12:10. If your child plans on buying lunch, the price is $2.50 and milk is $.40. Lunch money can be paid with cash or a check made out to Lake Shore Public Schools- money should be sent in an envelope or baggie with your child’s first and last name and teacher’s name on it. You can also pay online using efunds- see the Lake Shore Public Schools website for more information on funds.
Homework :
Homework is meant to reinforce what we are learning during the day and also teach your child responsibility. Every night I expect your child to read- the best way to become a better reader is to read, read, read! In addition to nightly reading, your child will receive math homework as part of our math program and will have spelling words to study. Assigned homework should not take longer than 20 minutes. However, if your child does not use time wisely in class they will bring home unfinished class work to complete as homework.
Communication
Home-school communication is essential. I will try to keep you informed in many ways- your child will have an agenda in their folder that will be used for communication, I have a classroom website which will be updated weekly, I will send out email updates as well. Please check your email and the class website regularly. Please feel free to call, email or jot me a note as needed.
Agenda
Inside your child’s folder will be an agenda which I call their "Peek at the Week". It lists the day, special class of the day, any important information for the day (such as early release, after school events, etc) and homework. At the end of the day, I will review the daily agenda with the children. The homework will be placed in the folder BEHIND the agenda. Students will also track their Class Dojo points on their agenda. I hope the agenda will help keep you in the loop of what is going on day to day in school.
Dismissal
Dismissal is at 3:04pm on regular school days, 1:34pm on early dismissal days, and 11:05 on half days (all early dismissal days and half days are listed on our class weebly and I will put them on the agenda sheets). 2nd graders will be dismissed out the doors near the kindergarten playground. If there is a change to your child’s normal dismissal procedure- please send in a note so that I am aware of the change. Please do not call and leave a voicemail or email any transportation changes- if I happen to be out of the classroom a substitute teacher will not be able to retrieve any messages. If needed, you can call the office with any transportation changes and they will relay the message.
Grading
Not every paper that comes home will have a “grade” on it. Some papers will be reviewed together in class, or just have a “check mark” or sticker on it so you know that I looked it over. Assignments that do receive a grade will be graded as follows:
4- Exceeding Expectations
3- Meets Expectations
2- Partially Proficient
1- Not Proficient (Needs extra time and assistance practicing the skill)
Behavior Expectations for Room 10
At Masonic Heights, we have a simple acronym to help our students remember our school expectations. Since we are the Masonic Tigers- we expect them to ROAR. ROAR stands for: Respect Others, Act Responsibly.
Respect Others- be respectful by listening when someone is speaking, being kind, always trying your best, being honest and following procedures
Act Responsibly- be responsible for your work by completing it neatly and turning it in on time, be responsible for your materials by keeping them organized, be responsible for your behavior by making good choices.
Positive student behavior is one of the most important components of a classroom environment. I encourage positive behavior by recognizing students who are able to abide by the expectations of the classroom. If your child is having difficulty there may be a consequence such as receiving a warning, losing recess time and/or parent notified of the problem depending on the severity of the issue. Please check your child’s folder daily- the agenda sheet will indicate behavior problems.
Class Dojo: Class Dojo is an online system that I use to for behavior management, Students can earn points in class dojo and will keep track of their points on their daily agenda. Students can also lose points as a consequence. Students will have the opportunity to trade their points for "Dojo Dollars" and "go shopping" for candy, small trinkets and special privileges.
Compliments Jar: To encourage teamwork and good behavior, we use a compliments jar in our classroom. When the children are all trying their best, do a super job in the lunchroom, receive a compliment from another adult, etc. we add a marble to our jar. When the jar is full, the class receives a special treat for their hard work.
Your child will be very busy growing academically, socially and emotionally this year. I look forward to taking this journey with you and your child! Working together we will make 2nd grade a great learning experience for your child!
