Reader's Workshop: Everyday we have a chance to practice our literacy skills during our Reader's Workshop. This is a time where we do a reading minilesson and then children have the opportunity to practice literacy skills through literacy centers. While the children are engaged in these literacy activities, I will pull small groups of children for guided reading lessons at each child’s instructional level. The purpose of guided reading groups is to provide targeted strategy instruction to help your student improve accuracy and/or comprehension skills.
Literacy Centers: Students will also participate in Literacy Centers which is a chance for them to practice their literacy skills. Students will visit 2-3 centers a day when they are not working with me in guided reading. The centers are
Word work: Students practice spelling words, spelling patterns and sight words through a variety of games and activities. (Children will receive spelling words on Mondays and spelling tests are given on Fridays)
Listen to reading: I will read aloud to the students daily so they can be exposed to a variety of genres and hear fluent reading.
Work on Writing: Students will work on pieces from our writing workshop or work in their writing journal.
Read to Self: Students will read from “Just Right” books from their book box.
Read with Someone: Students will read with a buddy and practice summarizing and checking for understanding.
Writers Workshop: Writing instruction will also follow a workshop model with a mini lesson modeling a skill, time to practice the skills, independent writing time and end with a sharing time. Students will learn to write "super sentences" and complete paragraphs. We will be working on personal narratives, informational writing, opinion writing and poetry this year. Students will also have the opportunity to journal and write about topics of their own choosing or write in our class journals.
